The International, Educative-Informative Week for the Prevention of Child Abuse is taking place in Chisinau, Info-Prim Neo reports. In a communiqué, the Family Planning Association of Moldova says that November 19 was declared the World Day for the Prevention of Child Abuse, while the Convention on the Rights of the Child was signed on November 20. On these occasions, the International, Educative-Informative Week for the Prevention of Child Abuse is held at the foreign and national levels between November 13 and 19. A number of activities with and about the life of children without violence and abuse will be carried out during this week. The Family Planning Association of Moldova will organize exhibitions, performances, news conferences, book donations, recitals of poetry and other activities. The events will bring together children with disabilities and children from deprived families from Cimislia district, who are beneficiaries of the NGO “Near Them”, as well as all those who want to bring joy to the children, the communiqué says, According to a study carried out in 2004 by the Government of Moldova in concert with UNICEF, every sixth parent yells at the child, every fifth parent threatens the child with beating, while every fourth parents beats the child. According to the same study, 25% of the children in Moldova admitted that they had been beaten by their parents because they were disobedient. 7% of the parents admitted to slapping the children when they were naughty, while 4% - to hitting them with different objects. One in ten children said the adults allowed them to watch pornographic movies. The World Health Organization said 53,000 crimes against children were committed in 2002. The study made by the World Health School shows that 20-65 % of the children of school age in developed countries have been abused physically and verbally at school during the last 30 years. The World Day for the Prevention of Child Abuse was established by the Women’s World Summit Foundation in 2000. This year, the event coincides with the anniversary of 20 years of the signing of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. This year, the Family Planning Association of Moldova together with its national partners became a member of the International NGO Coalition for the Prevention of Child Abuse, alongside 785 organizations from 127 countries. The Coalition aims to contribute to the creation of a culture for the prevention of child abuse and the formation of a global partnership network to sensitize and mobilize the people.
