An event that is intended to promote reading for children will be staged in three libraries in southern Moldova. A number of families with children aged between 2 and 13 from Andrusul de Jos and Manta villages of Cahul district and from Cahul town will take part in the activity “Hour of Tales” during August 20-31. This will be hosted by the Children’s Library “Grigore Vieru” of Cahul town and the public libraries of Andrușul de Jos and Manta, IPN reports.
The event “Hour of Tales” is staged as part of the project “Reading as a Family Activity” that is implemented by Maria Dandes as part of the subprogram “Diaspora Professional Return” that is carried out with the financial support of the governmental grants program “Diaspora Engagement Hub” of the Consolidating Moldova’s Migration and Development Institutional Framework Project. The project is implemented by the State Chancellery through the Bureau for Diaspora Relations and is financed by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation.
Maria Dandes, a Moldovan woman who settled in Montreal City, Canada, a decade ago, said the project “Reading as a Family Activity” is designed to promote reading through the event “Hour of Tales”. The project is intended exclusively for libraries and will be implemented in three stages. The project will be launched at the Children’s Library “Grigore Vieru” of Cahul on August 20 and 21 with the presentation of a model of “Hour of Tales”. Among the beneficiaries of the project are also families with children.
On August 22, 23 and 24, workshops will be held to train the personnel of the beneficiary libraries. On August 28, 29 and 30, the event will be staged at the libraries of Andrusul de Jos and Manta, where families with children will enjoy tale reading. Discussions on the necessity of continuing the activity outside the project will be larder held with mayors, villagers and librarians.
Maria Dandes has told IPN that the event is aimed at promoting reading, while the “Hour of Tales” is an efficient method of motivating the parents to take their children to the library. By this project, she also wants to share the professional experience she gained by promoting such activities in Montreal, at the Library and National Archives of Quebec, BANQ, and at another library in the suburbs of Montreal.
“I would like to make the parents realize the importance of becoming involved in reading activities together with children. The modern world of electronic innovations eliminates the interaction between mates and with community institutions. We should not forget that reading remains a fundamental step in the spiritual, intellectual and personal development of children. The earlier is this precondition created for children, the richer are their prospects as adults,” stated Marian Dandes.
She noted such activities should be carried out in communities during several times a year so as to promote reading among the future generations.
