EU's offer of €60m for Transnistrian region remains valid, Antonio Costa

The European Union's offer of €60 million for the citizens of the Republic of Moldova living on the left bank of the Nistru remains valid, the President of the European Council Antonio Costa announced at a news conference held in Chisinau together with President Maia Sandu, IPN reports.

Antonio Costa said that the use of energy as a weapon is unacceptable, as are the constraints, the pressures on the economy.

"The European Union and its member states stand ready to support the Republic of Moldova to achieve full independence from any kind of energy supplies from Russia," stated the official.

According to him, the first and most important step was to reduce energy costs for the Moldovans, especially for the most vulnerable households, as well as for schools, hospitals and the business community.

"We will continue to help, as we helped the Transnistrian region of Moldova. Together we avoided a humanitarian crisis. The EU offer of €60 million for the citizens of the Republic of Moldova on the left bank remains valid," said the President of the European Council.

President Maia Sandu said that the European Union supports the Republic of Moldova not only in development, but also in times of crisis. "This winter, when Russia tried to blackmail us with gas, the European partners helped us protect the citizens and the economy from rising electricity prices," noted the official.

According to President Sandu, for 2025, the European Union allocated €250 million to support households on the right bank of the Nistru, affected by the increase in energy prices. The EU funds will cover the additional costs for up to 110 kWh of electricity per month by the end of the year. Also and will offer support to vulnerable families and social institutions, such as schools, kindergartens and hospitals.

In addition, private companies in the agri-food and production sectors will benefit from €15 million in support to compensate for a part of the increase in the electricity charges.

"At the same time, with European support, Moldova invests in energy security – renewable energy, energy efficiency and interconnections with Europe – so that no one can blackmail us anymore," said President Maia Sandu.

In the context of the energy crisis, the European Union's support package for the Republic of Moldova also contained a component for the left bank of the Nistru. It was an offer of €60 million, in addition to the aid provided at the first stage, to cover the energy needs of the region until mid-April. Tiraspol refused this help, opting for a Russian loan.
