The European Parliament will continue to assist Moldova in strengthening the national defense and security system and to support the reforms aimed at modernizing the country. Such statements were made in a meeting of Speaker Andrian Candu and the mission of the Subcommittee on Security and Defense of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the European Parliament, which is in Moldova on a visit, IPN reports.
Among the major subjects discussed in the meeting were the importance of strengthening the security and defense system of Moldova, the developments in the Transnistrian region and Gagauzia, the challenges in the region and the activity of the EU Border Assistance Mission to Moldova and Ukraine, said the Parliament’s press service.
Andrian Candu informed that the agreement to form a pro-European ruling alliance in Moldova was initialed and the new Government will be invested in the nearest future. The priority of the new Government will be to resume the discussions with the IMF, while the priorities of the parliamentary coalition will be to support the further implementation of the reform agenda, especially in the justice sector and the banking sector, to promote the fight against corruption and to strengthen the democratic institutions,” he stated.
The Speaker proposed staging training courses at the European Parliament for members of Moldova’s parliamentary commission on defense and public order so that these learn the best practices and expertise of the Subcommittee on Security and Defense. The given exchange of experience will help strengthen the Parliament’s capacities for accelerating the implementation of the Association Agreement’s provisions on security and defenses.
Andrian Candu also spoke about the legislative initiative to create a working group to ensure the functioning of the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia and of the national legal provisions concerning the special status of the region. He noted that this spring, after a long pause, the parliamentary dialogue between the two banks of the Nistru was resumed.
Chair of the Europeans Parliament Subcommittee on Security and Defense Anna Elżbieta Fotyga said the MEPs will continue to attentively follow the developments in the country because Moldova is an important player in the process of maintaining regional security and the political stability in the country is decisive in an unstable region.
