European Parliament asks to grant candidate country status to Ukraine and Moldova

The chairs of the political groups of the European Parliament on Thursday adopted a joint Declaration calling for Ukraine and Moldova to be granted EU Membership candidate status at the meeting of the European Council of June 23-24, said MEP Siegfried Mureșan.

“The European Union should show courage, resolve and vision in the current context of a brutal war of aggression against our European neighbor,” runs the Declaration.

Siegfried Mureșan noted that the European Parliament is the main supporter of the European course of Ukraine and Moldova. “We, the European Parliament, on March 1 adopted a resolution to offer a European perspective to Ukraine. On May 5, we also adopted, by a majority of votes, a resolution negotiated by me by which we ask to grant the candidate country status to the Republic of Moldova,” said the MEP.

According to him, it’s time for the other European institutions to more clearly show their support for Ukraine and Moldova by granting the candidate country status to the two states. “The European Parliament realized that the Republic of Moldova is as important for the European Union as Ukraine,” said the MEP.

Moldova filed an application for EU membership on March 3, following the submission of similar applications by Ukraine and Georgia. EU leaders are due to consider the membership applications. A unanimous decision is required to grant a country candidate status, following consultation with the European Parliament and the Commission.
