European Movement proposes banning Communist symbols

The European Movement of Moldova (MEM) calls on the civil society to try to persuade the parliamentary parties to elect the head of state during the next three weeks, which is the time limit. The MEM announced that in the near future, it will submit a draft law banning the use of Communist symbols – the hammer and the sickle, to the Alliance for European Integration In a news conference held at Info-Prim Neo on November 19, MP Oleg Serebrian, the president of the MEM, said that if the President of Moldova is not elected, the social, economic and legal situation will worsen. “2010 will be an electoral year, as 2009. A referendum could be held, but its outcome is unpredictable given the growing discontent of the population,” Serebrian said. Oleg Serebrian considers new political organizations and movements with much more radical, right- or left-wing messages could appear as a result. This could lead to the destabilization of the political situation. The MEM calls upon the NGOs to help promote a bill on Moldova’s de-Communization, which bans the Communist symbols and marginalizes the Communists Party accused of crimes. MEM secretary general Igor Klipii said Moldova must solve the problems caused by the Communist government. According to him, even the Council of Europe condemned the Communist crimes, describing them as fascist. “We consider that this bill must be discussed until the possible early parliamentary elections. It would be a crime to ignore the happenings and allow the PCRM to manipulate the people with dogmas,” Igor Klipii said. Oleg Serebrian also said that the draft law does not provide for the outlawing of the PCRM, but only for its marginalization, as many other countries did. “In order to marginalize the PCRM, we must not necessarily outlaw it, but launch a campaign to inform the people about the crimes committed by the Communist regime,” he said. According to him, the PCRM will be responsible for provoking early elections in 2010 and will have to suffer certain consequences. Oleg Serebrian stressed that as a member of the parliamentary group of the Democratic Party, he will make everything possible to convince his colleagues from the Alliance for European Integration to immediately adopt the bill.
