European ministers in Chisinau: Moldova must have clear perspective of joining EU

Moldova must have a clear perspective of joining the EU because this will stimulate the process of doing reforms in the country. At the same time, the population must be clearly told what is done in the country and what direction is followed. Such a message was transmitted by the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Sweden and Lithuania Margot Wallström and Linas Linkevičius, who paid a visit to Chisinau on May 4, IPN reports.

Margot Wallström noted that the European integration processes can help change the countries of Eastern Europe. She voiced hope that Moldova will make effort to fight corruption, to reform the justice sector, the prosecution service and the banking system, and to ensure the freedom of the media and gender equality. She also expressed her hope that an opportunity will be opened at the EaP Riga Summit for Moldova to obtain the perspective of joining the EU.

The Lithuanian official Linas Linkevičius said he knows from the experience of his country that the road to the EU must be free from corruption. Moldova has a lot of friends in the European Union, but these friends cannot do the homework instead of the Moldovans.

Moldova’s Foreign Minister Natalia Gherman said the visit by the two European ministers was paid in connection with the Riga Summit. The discussions centered on such issues as Moldova’s European agenda, the reformation process and the implementation of the Association Agreement with the EU.

Natalia Gherman noted that the visit by the two European ministers was a signal of support for Moldova’s European course.
