European laws for Moldova’s waters

A joint group of European and Moldovan experts have formulated a set of legislative proposals for adjusting the Moldovan legislation to the European norms on water protection. “At the national level, these proposals will be followed by a plan of action for implementing these laws,” Deputy Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Ion Apostol said on March 20, Info-Prim Neo reports. According to Claire Dupont, the law expert of the group, the countries situated in the Black Sea Area must formulate joint water policies so as to ensure environment protection. “In order to improve the situation in the field, there should be formulated laws that would regulate the efficient management of water resources,” Dupont said. The proposals of the group of experts were incorporated in the draft Water Law and in two regulations. In 2007, Moldova committed itself to adjusting the legislation on water to the EU directives so as to ensure environment protection in the Black Sea Basin. Therefore, during the last two years Moldova implemented the 2.2 million euro project “Cooperation in Environment Protection in the Black Sea Basin” financed by the European Commission as part of the Technical Assistance to the CIS (TACIS) program.
