Moldova’s integration into the EU will be impossible if corruption is not rooted out from all the spheres of society. Corruption became a danger that threatens state security and affects the work of the government, said President Nicolae Timofti, quoted by Info-Prim Neo. In the first meeting of the Supreme Security Council that he convened on June 5, Nicolae Timofti said that it does not matter how such a situation was created. It is now important to realize that the prevention of corruption is vital for Moldova’s existence. “The country benefited from tens of millions of dollars for reducing this phenomenon. There was set up the Center for Combating Corruption and Economic Crime, which will be named National Anticorruption Center from October 1. But the fight against corruption did not result in the punishment of senior officials,” said the head of state. He also said the strengthening of capacities, improvement of the legislation and of infrastructure, and increasing of the responsibility of the Supreme Court of Justice are among the top priorities. “Without an independent legal system, the reform strategy will not produce the expected result,” said the President. Nicolae Timofti stressed that each authority should get rid of the persons suspects of acts of corruption. The judges can be made more responsible if their salaries are raised. “There should be created a separate normative framework for fixing salaries for the judiciary. The necessary money can be initially allocated by the European Union. I spoke with the Head of the EU Delegation to Moldova and Dirk Schuebel, who said that the EU may agree to this,” he stated. The President said the reform at the Ministry of the Interior should be continued as this institution is most often accused of corruption. He suggested hastening the constitution of the National Integrity Commission. The meeting of the Supreme Security Council took place at the State Residence located on N. Iorga St.
