European financing for transport projects

The European Commission is making available €2.5 billion for projects to modernize the transport infrastructure on the EU’s trans-European transport network (TEN-T), as well as in Ukraine and Moldova, IPN reports, with reference to a press release of the Commission, published by EU NeighboursEast.

According to the press release, the projects selected through the 2024 Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) – Transport call for proposals will work towards creating sustainable and smart transport infrastructure, fostering interoperability and resilience within the network while seamlessly integrating various transport modes.

Selected projects will bolster the competitiveness of the internal market for both passengers and freight, for higher quality of life and lower emissions. The call for proposals also covers projects improving the safety across the EU’s transport network as well as its resilience against natural disasters.

In connection with the European initiative, Commissioner for Climate Action, responsible for transport, Wopke Hoekstra, said that “the massive floods that hit Europe over the last days provided a painful reminder of the need for our society to adapt to and increase its resilience to climate change.”

Thus, under the Connecting Europe Facility, the European Commission launched a new call for an amount of €2.5 billion. “We expect to support financially projects that will not only increase connectivity in Europe and with our neighbors, but which could also increase our infrastructure resilience to natural disasters and make it fit for handling climate risks,” stated Commissioner Hoekstra.

The closing date for applications is January 25, 2025.
