European donors provide €1.9bn to Moldova

Moldova will receive financial assistance to the value of €1.936 billion from European donors in 2011-2013. A document to this effect was signed by Premier Vlad Filat and EU Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighbourhood Policy Stefan Fule in Brussels on March 24, the Government's press service has said, quoted by Info-Prim Neo. The assistance program for Moldova was signed after the Donor's Consultative Group Meeting themed “Partnership for Moldova”, which was co-hosted by the European Commission and the World Bank. The meeting was attended by 32 bilateral institutions and 10 multilateral development organizations. The discussions centred on four general areas: the strategic priorities and political reforms of the Government; the macroeconomic situation and the governmental program of structural economic and social reforms; the foreign assistance necessities and strategies for increasing the efficiency of this assistance; and the answer from the donor community. The representatives of the Moldovan Government reaffirmed that the European integration is the highest priority and that the implementation of reforms that could bring Moldova closer to the EU is the most efficient method of ensuring the country's political, economic and social integration. “I'm sure that all my colleagues are now more optimistic about our country's future. We return yet home with great responsibility. We want to prove that we have an efficient and transparent government that focuses on the needs of the people,” Prime Minister Vlad Filat said at the meeting. The World Bank Country Director for Ukraine, Belarus and Moldova Martin Raiser said the Moldovan authorities realize that constant and long-term measures are needed to ensure prosperity. “But the authorities already proved that they are committed to liberalizing the economy, combating corruption, reforming the legal system and ensuring good governance in the public sector. This ambitious commitments deserve international support,” Martin Raiser said. The EU Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighbourhood Policy Stefan Fule said the EU backs the Government's strategic paper “Rethink Moldova”. “For the EU, Moldova is more than a neighbour. It is a close partner with which we cooperate in making this region more stable and prosperous. Stability at the EU's border means stability in the EU,” he said.
