European Council on Foreign Relations requests European Commission to formulate plan of action for liberalizing visa regime for Moldova

The European Council on Foreign Relations adopted a set of conclusions concerning Moldova, inviting the European Commission to draft plan of action for liberalizing the visa regime. In a press briefing on Monday, Prime Minister Vlad Filat said owing to this plan, the Moldovan people in 18 months will travel in Europe visa-free, Info-Prim Neo reports. “The adoption of a separate Conclusion on Moldova points to the importance attached by the European Union to the relations with Moldova. The recognition of the steps taken to democratize Moldova is very important for the dialogue between Moldova and the EU,” said Vlad Filat. The conditions imposed by the EU include the securing of the personal data and identification papers, ensuring of border security, implementation of the readmission process and creation of adequate conditions for migration. The Premier said that some of these conditions are being fulfilled, while others will be met in the near future, like the introduction of biometric passports on January 1, 2011. “The liberalization of the visa regime is a commitment that we made when he took over and we made effort to achieve it during a year,” Vlad Filat said. He also said that the European Council on Foreign Relations approves of the steps taken by Moldova to develop the relations with the European Union. In a resolution adopted on October 21, the European Parliament also praised Moldova for the progress made in coming closer to the EU.
