European Commission's Delegation say efforts will be made to open visa regime talks with Moldova on June 15

The Moldovan Government's serious attitude to the negotiations on the liberalization of the visa regime is obvious. Efforts will be made for the talks to open on June 15, Joannes de Ceuster, a member of the European Commission's mission assessing the situation before launching the talk on a liberalized visa regime between Moldova and the EU, said at a meeting with Prime Minister Vlad Filat. Vlad Filat said the Moldovan authorities realize that sweeping reforms must be implemented for the people of Moldova to be allowed to enter the EU visa-free, it is said in a press release from the Government, quoted by Info-Prim Neo. “For 20 years, the Moldovan citizens have looked how trains go to different directions. We think it is now time that our citizens get on the train that goes to Europe,” the Premier said, adding that Moldova needs a road map and counts on the European experts' support in correctly implementing the measures needed to obtain a liberalized visa regime. He voiced hope the liberalization of the visa regime will contribute to solving the Transnistrian dispute. The European Commission's mission paid a fact-finding visit to the state-run company “Registru” and inquired about the procedure for issuing biometric passports. Joannes de Ceuster said the ensuring of biometric documents' security is an important aspect examined during the talks on the visa regime. Deputy Minister of Information and Communication Technology Dorin Recean said 1,330 Moldovans received biometric passports during February 2, 2008 – March 2, 2010. If the production capacity is improved, the identification papers will be issued faster. The European Commission's mission has been in Chisinau between March 1 and 3.
