The European Action Movement (MAE) expresses its concern over “the anti-democratic, anti-Romania and anti-European policy pursued by the Moldovan Communist rulers”, Info-Prim Neo reports, quoting a communiqué from MAE. According to the cited source, during a televised program late in April, President Vladimir Voronin said that the war of 1992 was started by Chisinau at the insistence of the then Romanian administration. MAE stresses that during this entire period, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, Andrei Stratan has maintained that Moldova will sign the convention on small cross-border traffic only after Romania initials the basic treaty and the border delimitation treaty. Given such circumstances, MAE supports the Romanian authorities’ initiative to facilitate small traffic over the Moldovan-Romanian border. Also, MAE demands that the Government of Moldova unconditionally and immediately sign the European Commission-backed convention on small-scale traffic on the border with the European Union proposed by the Romanian Government on March 25. At the same time, MAE warns the Moldovan authorities that the non-signing of the given convention affects about 1 million Moldovans living near the border and defies the Good Neighborhood Policy of the European Union. MAE expresses its support for democratic and pro-European parties’ initiatives aimed at hastening the signing of the convention on small cross-border traffic and calls on all the members and supporters of MAE to actively participate in the protests that will be held on May 25. In the same connection, MAE reiterates the necessity of opening Romanian consulates in Balti and Cahul. The party considers that the two consulates would facilitate the legalization of visas for Moldovan citizens and would offer the possibility of traveling to Romania freely.
