Eurasia Foundation Moldova launches a project regarding future elections in Gagauzia
Eurasia Foundation Moldova launched on Wednesday, October 11, the project “Free and fair elections for the Governor (Bashkan) of Gagauzia (Gagauz-Yeri)”.
The project's activities that are organized in the period of October 2006 - January 2007 will include the monitoring of the electoral campaign, as well the conduct of the press in the elections.
Paul Strutzescu, head of the League for the Defense of Human Rights in Moldova (LADOM), stated that during the pre-electoral period will be inaugurated a hot line that will offer to the citizens the possibility to claim the offences traced by them. Strutzescu said also that as apart of this project there will be made a parallel counting of the votes with that ensured by the Central Electoral Commission on the night after elections.
The project is part of the program Moldova Eurasia Foundation “Citizens’ participation in good governing”, which will promote and increase the civic commitment (engagement) by establishing some reliable relations between the Government, civil society, mass-media and citizens, in the key-field of the democratic culture for free and fair elections.
The project will be implemented by the Association for Participatory Democracy ADEPT, League for the Defense of Human Rights in Moldova (LADOM) and the Independent Press Association (IPA). The project is financially supported by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Swedish Agency for International Development and Cooperation (SIDA) and the US National Fund for Democracy.
The elections for the position of governor (bashcan) of ATU Gagauzia will be held on 3 December 2006. The electoral campaign was launched on October 4. Two electoral candidates - Gheorghe Tabunscic and Nicolai Dudoglo, both of them being independent candidates, participated in the electoral campaign till this moment.
