On Sunday, April 29, Eugene Ionesco Theatre (TEI) will close its theatrical season with the play “Chirita in Provincie” by Vasile Alecsandri, directed by Petru Vutcarau. The performance will start at 14:00. “Chirita in Provincie” is the second play, after “The Revisor”, part of the Retro Season, opened by TEI in October 2006. Its first performance took place on March 4, 2007. The leading part of ma’am Chirita was plaid by Veaceslav Sambris. Other actors featuring in the play include Vitalie Drucec, Andrei Sochirca, Alina Lungu-Turcanu, Petru Oistric, Angela Sochirca, Leo Rudenco, and Andrei Locoman. According to sources within TEI, the Retro Season is a project that will be carried out for several years and was designed to replay the most known and appreciated plays by TEI, including “The Revisor”, by Gogol, “Wating for Godot” by Beckett, “The Bold Soprano” and “Exit the King” by Ionesco etc. “Eugene Ionesco”, the most popular theatre in Moldova, with a history of almost 16 years, was offered a stage in late March, in the building of the former entertainment venue “Moscova” located on Renasterii Boulvard in Chisinau. The building was given to the theatrical troupe by the state authorities and presented to the artists by President Voronin himself. “Eugene Ionesco” Theatre was founded on September 11, 1991 by a team of actors, who graduated from “Shciuikin” Theatre School in Moscow. In 1993 the Theatre became a member of ITEM (Informal European Theatre Meeting). In 1994, the theatre launched and organised together with the Ministry of Culture the first International Theatre Festival in Moldova – The biennale of “Eugene Ionesco” Theatre (BITEI), which reached the 7 edition this year. “Eugene Ionesco” Theatre has a series of prestigious awards at international theatre festivals: Tallinn (Estonia), Ivano-Frankovsk (Ukraine), Oradea, Bucuresti, and National Gala of Dramatic Recitals of the International Culture and Art Centre “Geroge Apostu”, all from Romania, and others.
