Eugen Sturza: Imminent danger for Moldova comes from Transnistrian region

Currently, the imminent danger for the Republic of Moldova comes from the Transnistrian region where there are foreign military troops, Minister of Defense Eugen Sturza was quoted by IPN as saying in the program “Emphasis on today” on TVR Moldova channel.

“You see the exercises they stage: without registration numbers, without military signs, which is illegal. They acted similarly in Crimea in 2014,” stated the minister, noting the early warning and response system should be developed.

Eugen Sturza said the Republic of Moldova should take part in ensuring international security and well-trained people who make a long-term career of the military profession are needed for the purpose. “In three years, we will have an entirely different army in the Republic of Moldova. This will be well-equipped, with professionals and with adequate salaries that will enable to remain and work in the country,” he stated.

As to challenges, the minister said these include the improper equipment of the army, the small budget and the foreign military presence on the country’s territory. Eugen Sturza noted a cyber threat fighting center is now being built. “The Republic of Moldova should be ready to respond to a cyber attack,” he added.
