On Tuesday, April 17, the EU Border Assistance Mission to Moldova and Ukraine (EUBAM) inaugurated a photo exhibition on border issues, themed “Crossing Borders”. The exhibition is displaying photographs taken by Moldovan and Ukrainian photo correspondents showing border crossing points, the daily work of border guard and customs services, cross-border cooperation, border area views, EUBAM staff and people using the borders. Premier Vasile Tarlev stated at the exhibition’s opening that the event will inform the general public about the Moldovan and Ukrainian authorities’ efforts, actively supported by the EU, in the process of modernising border management and strengthening Moldova-Ukraine border control. According to him, EUBAM has successfully cooperated with Moldova since 2005 and will further remain a priority for Moldovan authorities. As the Prime Minister says, the provided assistance contributes to developing capacities and adjusting the procedures for performing border control to EU standards. Head of EUBAM Mission Ferenc Banfi said that “The European Union’s relations with Moldova are growing and this means more travel and more movement of goods and people between our states. This presents tremendous opportunities for all of us and the border professionals are helping us to seize these opportunities. But there are also threats – from smuggling, illegal migration and other illegal activities – which European states have to work together to fight”, said General Banfi. The exhibition runs from April 17 to 26 at the Press House in Chisinau.
