EU will not offer accession perspectives to EaP countries, experts

The European Union will not offer accession perspectives to the Eastern Partnership countries, including Moldova, at the Riga Summit. Such statements were made in the talk show “European Horizon” on TVR Moldova channel, IPN reports.

Political analyst Ion Ionita considers the EU will not offer Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova the same perspectives as to the Western Balkans at the Riga Summit. “Moldovan society is powerfully divided and the EU cannot impose the European course on it. The people must decide by themselves what road the country should follow. Such a decision cannot be taken by someone else,” he said.

Angela Gramada, head of the Experts for Security and Global Affairs Association, said the EU will take a break so as to offer these countries time to decide for sure in what direction they will go. “These countries should ultimately decide by themselves if they want to undergo structural transformations or to continue to stagnate. There is a big possibly that a transformation will occur in Moldova,” she stated.

Arcadie Barbarosie, executive director of the Institute of Public Policy, said Moldova now does not need membership perspectives, but rather an encouraging message. “We are not ready for obtaining the status of candidate country, not speaking about accession,” he noted.
