EU to offer several tranches of financing to Moldova in near future

Moldova will receive tens of millions of euros from the European Union based on four financing agreements that were signed by President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso and Prime Minister Iurie Leanca in Chisinau on June 12, IPN reports.

“The accords we signed and the financing that will come in the future are part of the act of cooperation. They will categorically become reality and are not only political promises. It is a proof of the solidarity of the European Union and its citizens with the citizens of Moldova,” said Jose Manuel Barroso.

“We will offer €21 million for implementing the Agreement on Free Movement in the EU. More millions of euros will come to support the energy sector, while another €14 million will be allocated for developing rural regions.”

Jose Manuel Barroso noted that by this assistance, the European Union wants to assure once again the Moldovan government of its support in implementing reforms, which is an obligatory condition in the European integration process. The EU already doubled the export quotas on plums, apples, grapes and tomatoes grown in Moldova.

While in Chisinau, the European official will have meetings with the head of state, the parliamentary speaker, party leaders and representative of the business community.
