EU senior official calls on Government to rapidly conclude agreement with IMF

Katarína Mathernová, the European Commission’s Deputy Director-General for Neighborhood and Enlargement Negotiations, who visited Chisinau on June 20-21 to discuss progress in reforms in key areas, called upon the authorities to rapidly conclude an agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), IPN reports.

According to a press release of the EU Delegation to Moldova, in the meetings with Moldovan officials during her visit, Katarína Mathernová emphasized the need for genuine implementation of reforms included in the priority reforms roadmap, noting that structural reforms are needed for the benefit of the country and her citizens.

The official underlined the EU support to the Republic of Moldova in the process of implementing reforms aimed at tangible change.

Governance in the banking sector was given particular attention in the meetings. Katarína Mathernová encouraged the authorities to conclude an agreement with the IMF rapidly, to address the remaining weaknesses in the banking and energy sectors, saying the agreement is necessary for the resumption of EU budget support financing.
