EU remains committed to further support Moldova

The European Union is a very important and reliable partner of the Republic of Moldova. The EU is ready to continue to offer assistance in implementing reforms so that the Republic of Moldova comes closer to the European values, while the people enjoy better living standards. Such statements were made in the inauguration of the European Town in the Public Garden “Stefan cel Mare” in Chisinau, IPN reports.

Head of the EU Delegation to Moldova Pirkka Tapiola said that this year the EU has celebrated 60 years of the signing of the Treaty of Rome. The European project was a method of preventing the repeat of the conflict that practically destroyed a whole continent. The European Union is built on solid values, such as rule of law, democracy, human rights and this ensemble makes the EU stronger.

The diplomat said the EU is one of the biggest powers in the world. It is a global player and a reliable partner, including for the Republic of Moldova. The EU remains committed to support the reforms done in Moldova. These will continue because they are for the benefit of the people. This year’s European Town is the last that he inaugurates in Chisinau as he is completing his duties in the Republic of Moldova.

Speaker of Parliament Andrian Candu said the European Town is an extraordinary event organized annually. The visitors can see how different the EU member states are by history and culture, but also how united they are by diversity, democracy, human rights, etc. “We are Europeans. The Republic of Moldova is a European state and each day we come closer to the European Union,” he stated.

President Igor Dodon’s secretary Ion Ceban read the Head of State’s message, which says that the European Union is an important partner and neighbor of the Republic of Moldova. According to the President, there should be realized the existing potential and used the opportunities to initiate projects that will be for everyone’s benefit.

Mayor Dorin Chirtoaca congratulated the inhabitants of Chisinau on the occasion of Europe Day. He enumerated the projects implemented in the municipality of Chisinau with support from the EU, mentioning the repair of streets, setting up of lighting to the airport, building of the pedestrian street, assembly of trolleybuses, provision of modern equipment to health facilities and others.

The European Town was opened on May 14. The visitors are expected at the tents put up by the embassies of the EU member states and partner countries, where they will be informed about the projects implemented in Moldova with European financing. In the evening, the final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 will be broadcast live in the central park of Chisinau, starting at 9pm. The European Town will also host the European Cultural Festival that was launched at 1pm on May 14 and will last until May 19.
