EU Presidency demands Russia to execute the decision of ECHR on Ilascu case

The Presidency of the European Union demands the Russian Federation to make all necessary efforts in order to ensure carrying out the decision of the European Court for Human Rights (ECHR) on the “Ilascu” case, is said in a declaration of the Finish presidency of EU, which was made within the frameworks of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe. “We are deeply concerned with the “Ilascu” case, which was not yet solved. Over the last month, EU made numerous declarations calling on integrally implementing the decision of the Court. The Committee of Ministers already adopted four interim resolutions on this issue”, the declaration informs. All the decisions of the Court must be implemented unconditionally by the side which was found guilty of violating the European Convention of Human Rights. The Russian Presidency of the Committee of Ministers is coming up, and refusing to execute the decision of the Court lays a bad mark on its mandate and seriously threatens the credibility of the human rights’ protection system of the Council of Europe, the declaration concludes. Ilie Ilascu, together with other 5 citizens of the Republic of Moldova, was imprisoned on June 2, 1992, being accused by the Transnistrian authorities of war crimes and terrorist acts. Ilascu, who was sentenced to death, was set free in May 2001. In 2004 Ilascu group has won at ECHR. The Court decided to immediately set free two members from Ilascu group, who were being imprisoned in Tiraspol – Andrei Ivantoc and Tudor-Popa, who were not yet set free.
