The European Union must hasten the signing of the Association Agreement with Moldova so as to offer the country more political support and security given the current political crisis, Romanian MEP Monica Macovei said in the program “Fabrika” on Publika TV channel, IPN reports.
The MEP underlined that the EU must respond with crisis solutions to those who caused it, skip the bureaucracy and hasten the signing of the Association Agreement with Moldova. “The signing of this accord will bring Moldova politically closer to the European Union so that it will enter the EU’s security and safety area. The shorter the dangerous period, the better. Dialogue with Russia should exist, but in a period of political crisis it should be clear that coming closer to the EU does not mean destroying the relations with Russia,” she said.
She also said that Russia may recognize the independence of the Transnistrian region and the armed attacks on the part of Russia will not stop. Russia can deploy troops in other former Communist states so as to restore the Soviet Union. The representatives of Poland and the Baltic Countries in the European Parliament announced that they prepare for a war with Russia as a large part of citizens in these countries are Russian ethnics.
Monica Macovei stressed the European Union must not wait for the Association Agreement with Moldova to be translated into all the official languages of the EU and must sign it as soon as possible. The rest of the translations can be done later. The integration into the EU is possible after submitting an application. Normally, this process lasts for several years, but in crisis situations it can be shortened. Moldova can become an EU member state on condition that all the initiated reforms are continued. A part of them may be delayed owing to the current political crisis, but will have to be implemented later so as to avoid penalties on the part of the EU.
In the same program, journalist Ion Terguta said the pressure exerted by Russia on Moldova can increase after the signing of the Association Agreement with the European Union. The trade sanctions may be the first actions against Moldova, but the pressure will also be related to the security issue, through the separatist Transnistrian region. “Moldova will possibly be blackmailed into recognizing the annexation of Crimea in exchange for not annexing the Transnistrian region. I’m sure that Russia already made certain offers in this respect through the agency of its embassy. But we have no reason to interrupt the diplomatic relations with Russia,” he stated.
According to political analyst Mihai Cernencu, Russia may lie to Moldova that it can persuade those from Transnistria to take part in the parliamentary elections of this year so as to bring to power forces that can make a radical turn and would defend the interests of Moscow. It’s not excluded that Russia will use such a weapon in order to remove the current government.
