EU must guarantee that Russia will not intervene in Moldova’s foreign policy, MEP

The European Union must guarantee that the dialogue between Moldova and Russia will take place by obeying basic rules and that Russia will not intervene in Moldova’s economic or foreign policy, while the EU should do the same. The statement was made by the MEP of the Europe of Freedom and Direct Democracy Group Daniela Aiuto, who forms part of the EU-Moldova parliamentary delegation, in an interview for Radio Free Europe, IPN reports.

The MEP said that Moldova inherited historically a Russian influence and now has to cope with it. “The EU must help countries like Moldova, Georgia and Ukraine to obtain instruments that will enable them to decide by themselves what road they want to follow at internal and external levels,” said Daniela Aiuto. According to her, the EU must not leave Moldova alone in this effort.

In another development, the official said that the EU should not yet intervene in the development of a country, in the democratic developments in a state. “As internal interference on the part of the EU should not be tolerated, interference on the part of other states can also not be tolerated - Russia in the case of Moldova. Actually, Parliament, which is the voice of the people in the country’s administration, should have absolute freedom to choose the priorities of the country and the road that must be followed,” stated Daniela Aiuto.

According to her, the Moldovans must choose the road they want to follow without being influenced by priorities or external calculations of other countries or international organizations.
