EU leaders elect new President of European Commission

Former Prime Minister of Luxemburg Jean-Claude Juncker was elected as President of the European Commission by the EU leaders. The candidate is to be confirmed by the European Parliament, it is said on the official website of the European Council, IPN reports.

The European Council decided to meet again on July16 to complete the nominations for other senior positions in the EU administration.

Jean-Claude Juncker, 59, was Prime Minister of Luxemburg in 1995-2013. Within the EU, until 2013 he served as president of the Eurogroup - an informal body that brings together the finance ministers of countries whose currency is the euro. Juncker was also minister of finance of Luxemburg in 1989-1995.

Until now, the post of President of the European Commission was held by Jose Manuel Barroso.
