EU is averse to enlargement, Parliamentary Speaker

There had always been discussions about the European prospect inside the EU the last few years, concerning not only Moldova, but also other countries with such aspirations and the Europeans always were averse to enlargement, Head of Parliament Igor Corman said in N4 channel’s program “Fourth Power”, IPN reports.

The Speaker said the EU expressed opposition especially after the last enlargement wave, owing to the problems inside the EU and the need to strengthen the Union from political viewpoint and to solve the financial problems, and it is thus not ready to hold discussions on a possible extension. “It was discussed the necessity of not formulating clear accession prospects in certain texts and statements for countries, including Moldova,” said Igor Corman.

According to him, EU officials recently asserted that a mistake was made in the case of Ukraine, as it wasn’t offered a clear accession prospect. “I think such discussions are held now as the granting of the prospect would serve as a powerful motivation for doing reforms, which are not at all easy,” stated Igor Corman.

He also said that the attitude towards Moldova has changed and this was seen in the meetings he had with EU officials. “We may reach the phase when this reluctance will disappear and we will obtain this additional stimulus if we are offered a clear prospect of joining the EU,” he said.
