EU hopes Moldovan politicians heard its call for unity

“Most political leaders that I met suggested that the idea of supporting internal unity of Moldova is one that they intend to implement in practice. And I hope this will happen indeed”, said MEP Adrian Severin, the vice-president of the Socialists and Democrats Group, when asked by Info-Prim Neo to anticipate the reaction of the Moldovan politicians to the messages voiced by important European officials during their visit to Chisinau last week. “Personally, I am hopeful that this message has been heard. And I trust that it will be followed accordingly”, said Severin. “I can only hope at this moment, a hope reinforced by this round of meetings, that this truly unprecedented message by the EU has been heard. It is difficult for me to say it, but this is a generally known fact, that Moldova is not a superpower, it's not even great in size. However, the presence of these ministers and European officials here, the fact that we all came here representing the Council of Europe, the European Commission, the European Parliament, really means something. And the visits will continue”, said the MEP. According to Adrian Severin, the EU representatives who visited Chisinau will meet this week in Brussels to exchange opinions “on what they heard and saw”. “The desired effect is to make it clear that we support the Republic of Moldova in its attempt to build its destiny and accomplish this internal unity that I mentioned earlier. And the politicians in Moldova, the elites, the government, have the primordial responsibility in this respect”. Earlier at a news conference, Adrian Severin said that the purpose of the European officials' visit was to convey two messages: “the first is that Moldova's European aspirations are supported by virtually all those who are entitled to speak in the name and on behalf of the European Union. The second message is that we are all concerned about this state of political instability that has been persisting in Moldova”. In the context of these messages, the EU believes that the political forces should group together ahead of the forthcoming elections, depending on the option that they advocate for, added Adrian Severin.
