EU helps Moldova because it needs stability on border, opinions

The European Union needs stability and prosperity on the border, considers political commentator Anatol Țăranu. He said the consistent financial assistance announced by the European states in Berlin on Tuesday is designed to support Moldova’s economic development and to increase the population’s incomes. For their part, representatives of the Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS) said the announced financial support will be used to Europeanize and modernize the country so that the Republic of Moldova becomes an EU candidate country as soon as possible, IPN reports.

PAS MPs said the Moldova Support Conference held in Berlin was a historical event that showed the European community’s support for the reforms initiated by the current government.

“It is a historical sum and these resources will be provided to the Republic of Moldova to develop the country, to ensure energy security, to build infrastructure, to improve living standards and do reforms. This process of providing financial support will be closely related to our European course and the road to obtaining the status of EU candidate. Earlier, financial assistance was offered mostly by bilateral ways between states and at the level of the EU. Now we see a well-coordinated process between the EU member states, aimed at supporting the European and development path of our country,” PAS MP Adrian Băluțel stated in the program “Emphasis on Today” on TVR Moldova channel.

Political commentator Anatol Țăranu said the EU supports Moldova because it wants prosperous neighbors and because the whole European community does not want the Republic of Moldova to be under Russia’s sphere of influence.

“This financial assistance is vital for our state for the simple reason that we are in a very acute crisis caused by a large number of foreign factors. Without this assistance the Republic of Moldova will not be able to cope alone. The European Union is interested in having stability on its borders. It does not want neighbors that are unable to regulate the own internal affairs and from which flows of refugees, crime can come to the EU. From this perspective, the EU acts absolutely pragmatically. But we cannot exclude the affective side, when the EU realizes that if the Republic of Moldova is abandoned, this will mean that the expansion of the Russian Federation could not be stopped and, if it is encouraged, this expansion can spill over the borders of Eastern Europe,” stated Anatol Țăranu.

A Moldovan delegation led by Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilița took part in the Moldova Support Conference staged in Berlin by Germany, France and Romania on April 5. At the event, the participants announced a total amount of €659.5 million in direct financial support for Moldova, including €108.2 million in direct grant assistance and €530 million in credit lines.
