The national vaccine depot of the National Public Health Agency was reopened after renovation. The works were financed by the EU, which also donated two mobile refrigerators ensuring temperatures of up to minus 90 degrees Celsius, in which Pfizer COVID-19 vaccines will also be kept, IPN reports.
The financial assistance for renovating the depot and the cost of refrigerators came to €776,000. The Agency’s director Nicolae Jelamschi said that this investment enables to create optimal conditions for keeping the vaccine shots. The prevention of disease among the population is a key priority for the Agency.
The Head of the EU Delegation to Moldova Janis Mazeiks said the European Union made sure that the Republic of Moldova has all the necessary logistics for delivering and administering vaccines, for preventing and minimizing the impact of COVID-19 and other diseases. The vaccination campaign, together with the works to renovate the national vaccine depot of the National Public Health Agency, are part of the EU-funded project to ensure the necessary vaccines and to reduce the impact of COVID-19 in the Eastern Partnership countries, which is implemented by the WHO.
“What I want most is for the citizens to realize that medicine cannot exist without science. All the made discoveries are used to improve health and to save human lives. I refer here to new treatment methods, to new equipment and we are glad when we have access to medicines, good hospitals, modern equipment,” said Minister of Health Ala Nemerenco, expressing her gratitude for the offered support.
WHO Representative in the Republic of Moldova Miljana Grbic said that it is important to invent new vaccines. No matter how good the shots are, they are useless if they do not reach the beneficiaries. ‘The Republic of Moldova has a well-planned system for managing vaccines. During a year alone, 4 million vaccines were stored and distributed all over the Republic of Moldova. It is important to invest in the national vaccine delivery chain,” noted the WHO Country Representative.
According to the Ministry of Health, over 1.61 million people in the Republic of Moldova completed the COVID-19 vaccine series. In 2021, the vaccine coverage for rubella, measles and mumps in Moldova was 83.2%.
