The European Union has offered the Food Bank of Moldova two refrigerator vans, which will make it possible to safely distribute perishable food collected by the Bank for services throughout the country.
Oleg Paraschiv, director of the Food Bank of Moldova, stated that this donation will increase the capacity of the Food Bank, improve its mobility and help it to diversify the range of collected products. “We need to reach as many businesses as possible, keep as many products as possible for human consumption and together support as many people as possible, because, sadly, the level of poverty is increasing”, he said.
Igor Belei, executive director of the Diaconia Social Mission, said that the Food Bank is a new service for the Republic of Moldova, but very popular throughout the European Union. “Today, thanks to this donation, the service will be expanded in terms of the number and quality of the products that we will be able to offer and that will remain in human consumption thanks to the innovative mechanism that we propose through the Food Bank. We have over 50 social services that feed 3000 people daily. These people who are under the care of the Food Bank will receive better quality products”, remarked the director of Diaconia.
The donation event took place within the project “Partnerships for inclusive and sustainable social canteen services”. The project is supported by the European Union and co-implemented by Keystone Moldova, Diaconia and Concordia. In March 2022, the Food Bank became an associate member of the European Federation of Food Banks, a structure that currently includes 330 Banks in 29 countries.
