The Delegation of the European Union to Moldova will attentively monitor the cases investigated by the National Anticorruption Center. In a working meeting on April 10, the Center’s director Viorel Chetraru informed the head of the EU Delegation’s Political and Economic Section Wicher Slaghter that the investigations carried out in the banking sector and the health system are a priority for the investigators and prosecutors, IPN reports.
Speaking about the last operation that resulted in the arrest of 16 functionaries, most of whom are representatives of the parties of the government coalition, Viorel Chetraru expressed his confidence that the politicians will now formulate with maximum attention the messages they transmit to the people and will dissociate themselves from the persons who are being investigated within this case of corruption.
Wicher Slaghter said the EU Delegation is closely monitoring the developments related to the recently communicated cases, which purportedly involve high-ranking government officials, and hopes that the cases will be investigated until the end and will be sent to court. “We call on the Moldovan authorities to refrain from interfering in the investigations into cases of high-level corruption, including from exerting pressure on prosecution officers, prosecutors and judges. We call upon the authorities to ensure a fair and transparent trial free from political or any other kind of pressure,” he stated.
Officers of the National Anticorruption Center form part of an anticorruption working group that includes representatives of the embassies of the EU Member States working in Moldova. The group’s objective is to assist and monitor the anticorruption processes performed by the Center.
