EU Delegation head observes corruption still exists in many institutions

Ambassador Dirk Schuebel, the Head of the EU Delegation to Moldova, thinks that eradicating corruption remains one of the most important tasks on Moldova's path towards European integration. He stated at a press briefing on Wednesday that corruption still exists in many institutions. Dirk Schuebel remarked that the justice reform has started rather well and actions need to be continued so as to genuinely reduce corruption within the judicial system until it is eventually eradicated completely. “I've talked to President Nicolae Timofti, who is very committed personally to this reform and I think this is a good sign, because he knows these issues from inside”, said Dirk Schuebel. While numerous reforms have been started in recent years, efforts should be stepped up to reform the Prosecutor General's Office, the Customs Service and the Fiscal Service, stated Dirk Schuebel. “In order to eradicate corruption, efforts should not be limited to just one institution. All the institutions should be reformed. Only in this case can the reform be far-reaching”. The Head of the EU Delegation went on to state that besides fighting corruption Moldova should concentrate its efforts on human rights and on the settlement of the Transnistrian conflict.
