The Foreign Affairs Council of the EU is trying to transmit signals not only to the political class of Moldova, but also to the whole society as regards the concerns that remain on the European Union’s agenda in relation to Moldova, Iulian Groza, executive director of the Institute for European Policies and Reforms said, commenting on the Council’s conclusions on Moldova formulated on February 26, IPN reports.

According to him, it is a call for the authorities to ensure the implementation not only of the conditions assumed through the Association Agreement with the EU, but also of those stipulated in the memorandum of understanding for providing macro-financial assistance. “These conclusions were formulated practically before the meeting of the Moldova - EU Association Council of the end of this April, which will produce a more comprehensive assessment of the bilateral relations with the EU,” Iulian Groza stated in the program “Emphasis on today” on TVR Moldova channel.

Editorialist Nicolae Negru said the tone of the Council’s report is more balanced than that of the similar report of February 15, 2016, where emphasis was laid mainly on what should be done. The current report provides a reason for the government to be satisfied, but there are also reasons for concern as a lot of serious things that the government promised to do, but didn’t are mentioned there. “The noted lack of progress in investigating the banking fraud, prosecuting those involved and restoring the money seems like a warning signal for me,” stated Nicolae Negru.

The Foreign Affairs Council of the European Union on February 26 reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening political association and economic integration between the EU and Moldova by working in close partnership, but underlined that for this support to be credible, the Moldovan authorities should make clear moves in the fight against corruption, in the justice sector reform and in the economy.
