EU considers women should be engaged in decisional posts

The European Union encourages the Moldovan authorities to increase the quota for women’s participation in the decision-making process. The Head of the EU Delegation to Moldova Pirkka Tapiola said the involvement of women in decisional roles is a natural process, IPN reports.

“We are close to the moment when I no longer give my vote for a man or a woman. It is a vote for a politician. The truth is that in the recent past I voted mainly for women because they are closer to my system of values,” the ambassador said in an event that involved the media.

Pirkka Tapiola said he is sure that the adoption of the legislation on gender equality in the electoral and political processes will be supported by Moldova’s Parliament. He could not say if the law will be applied in the June 30 parliamentary elections and called on the journalists to put this question to the Government and Parliament of Moldova.

“The Government, the Prime Minister support this law, which is very important, and I’m sure that the lawmakers will return to it,” stated Pirkka Tapiola.

Asked why Parliament delays adopting a women’s political participation quota, Prime Minister Iurie Leanca said the bill is being examined. It is two weeks until the MPs’ vacation and the relevant package of documents will be definitely examined in the nearest future.
