EU considers decision to set up migration points on the Nistru is right

The Head of the EU Delegation to Moldova Pirkka Tapiola considers that the decision to create six migration points on the Nistru River is right as these points will manage the migration flow through a segment that is not controlled by the constitutional authorities, IPN reports.

The European official said the Moldovan authorities managed to achieve two goals – to control the flow of migrants at the Moldovan-Ukrainian border through the Transnistrian segment and to hamper the creation of an artificial border in the middle of the country.

The control of the migration flow on the Nistru is an EU requirement for granting a liberalized visa regime for Moldovans. Pirkka Tapiola said he cannot say when Moldova will obtain a liberalized visa regime with the EU, but a new report on the implementation of the second phase of the visa liberalization plan is to be presented in November, following the visit paid by the Director General of the European Commission’s Directorate for Home Affairs Stefano Manservisi to Chisinau and Tiraspol.

The Head of the EU Delegation told the journalists that he had a meeting with the Transnistrian leader, which he considers productive. He believes the Transnistrian administration realizes that steps are being taken in the right direction.

Pirkka Tapiola said the Association Agreement with the EU will cover the whole territory of Moldova, including the Transnistrian region. The EU provides great assistance in order to encourage the coming closer of the two banks of the Nistru.
