EU Anti-Trafficking Day celebrated in Chisinau

Ten human figurines with real stories of Moldovan victims of human trafficking written on them were set up in the square of the Metropolitan Cathedral “God’s Birth” in Chisinau in connection with the celebration of the EU Anti-Trafficking Day. The event forms part of the communication campaign “Invisible Among Us” that was launched in Moldova on March 28 this year, IPN reports.

The figurines will be exhibited during October 18-25. The stories on them are written in the Romanian, Russian, Gagauz, Ukrainian and Romani languages and symbolize the fate of thousands of victims of trafficking in persons who often remain unseen.

The event was organized by the Standing Secretariat of the National Committee for Combating Trafficking in Human Beings of the State Chancellery in partnership with the International Organization for Migration Mission to Moldova and the Chisinau municipal commission for combating trafficking in human beings.

The goal of the campaign is to sensitize and inform the people about the risks and consequences of trafficking in persons, with emphasis on particular groups, such as children living on the street, children who remained without parental care, orphans, young graduates of residential institutions, victims of domestic violence, persons with disabilities and elderly people.

There was also staged a workshop to discuss such subjects as the functionality of the inter-institutional mechanism for supporting and protecting victims of trafficking in persons and preventing cases of trafficking in Chisinau municipality.

Moldova has marked the EU Anti-Trafficking Day on October 18 since 2012.
