EU and U.S. ambassadors condemn Parliament decisions on CC

EU Ambassador to Moldova Peter Michalko said the events witnessed in Parliament today, against the Constitutional Court, including the attempt to modify the composition of the Court, are a clear attack on the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova and the Constitutional Court’s independence. The ambassador posted the reaction on his Facebook page, IPN reports.

U.S. Ambassador Dereck Hogan also came with a reaction after he met with President Maia Sandu today to discuss recent threats against the Constitutional Court and today’s unconstitutional attempt to subvert the Constitutional Court by removing Justice Domnica Manole and naming an illegitimate replacement.

The U.S. diplomat noted that while the vote by the majority of Parliament to condemn the Constitutional Court is non-binding, this lack of respect for the separation of powers is a troubling sign for Moldova’s future. “Respect for rule of law and an independent judiciary are cornerstones of democracy. Moldova should not return to a climate of fear and intimidation,” said
Dereck Hogan.

Earlier today, Parliament annulled the decree to appoint Domnica Manole as a Constitutional Court judge and adopted a statement on the capture of the Constitutional Court. Also, Boris Lupașcu was named CC judge by the votes of 56 MPs. A protest against these events is mounted in front of the Constitutional Court.
