ePrescription: Patients will go to pharmacy after compensated medicines only with IDs

The authorities have launched nationwide the electronic system for prescribing and dispensing compensated medicines and medical devices – ePrescription. The patients who are prescribed compensated medicines can go to the pharmacy only with their IDs to pick them up. The electronic prescription comes to take the pressure off both the healthcare system and the patient, Minister of Health Ala Nemerenco told a press conference.

The official noted that the ePrescription system enables not only the family doctor but also specialists to prescribe compensated medicines and devices. Doctors from emergency admissions units, those working in the palliative care system and other fields will also be able to issue prescriptions. The ePrescription system reduces fraud that can exist in the system when prescribing compensated medicines and devices.

“We know that in a number of localities, there are not enough doctors. So, the ePrescription comes to replace this unnecessary movement from doctor to doctor. we know that patients very often go for consultation to specialists, including national institutions, in Chisinau, but these specialists weren’t authored to prescribe medicines and had to refer the patients to their locality, villages to be issued with this prescription, which meant absolutely unnecessary trips,” said Ala Nemerenco, noting that many of these trips have been eliminated.

National Health Insurance Company (CNAM) director general Ion Dodon said that on the first day of the launch of this information system, about 1,300 patients have already benefited from compensated medicines and medical devices through the ePrescription system. More than 3,000 compensated medicines and medical devices were released. This information system allows the patients to benefit directly or through a person who is empowered by the patient to pick up the medicines from the pharmacy. “The patient informs the doctor that they cannot go to the pharmacy and indicates the personal code of a relative, for example, or of a neighbor or another person who can go to the pharmacy instead of them,” stated Ion Dodon.

He noted that the system is developed to improve the quality of the medical service and to create comfort for the patient and also for the doctor and pharmacist, and t also ensure better management of public funds.

The information system was developed during a year. Between October 2023 and March 2024, CNAM representatives conducted training seminars for doctors and pharmacists on the application of the ePrescription. Doctors and pharmacists with the right to prescribe and dispense compensated pharmaceutical products are urged to access exclusively the ereteta.cnam.gov.md platform.

The system is developed to improve the quality of the medical act and to create comfort for the patient, but not least for the doctor and pharmacist. It is also developed for a better management of public money, added the CNAM director-general.
