The Group of the European People’s Party (EPP) in the European Parliament proposed inviting the President of Moldova Maia Sandu to address the European legislative body. “Together with the Chairman of the EPP Group in the European Parliament Manfred Weber and the Group’s Deputy Chairwoman Rasa Jukneviciene, earlier this week we transmitted a letter to the European Parliament President Roberta Metsola, offering her to invite the President of the Republic of Moldova Maia Sandu to address the European Parliament,” Romanian MEP Siegfried Mureșan posted on his Facebook page.

“In the letter, we noted that in the tense political context in the Eastern neighborhood, there is a country in the region where there are positive developments and this is the Republic of Moldova. We said that there is a pro-European political majority in Chisinau, which during the last few months proved that it wants and can implement the reforms expected by the people. It is a majority that wants to come closer to the European Union. We also said that President Maia Sandu is the main catalyst for these positive developments. That’s why, by inviting President Maia Sandu to the European Parliament, we transmit a clear message of support for the reform efforts in Chisinau and for the efforts to bring the European Union and the Republic of Moldova closer to each other.

“The proposal of the EPP Group was discussed and accentuated at the Conference of Group Chairpersons and President Roberta Metsola in the immediate period will invite President Maia Sandu to address the European Parliament,” stated Siegfried Mureșan.

Contacted by IPN, Sorina Ștefârță, spokeswoman for the presidential administration, said the EPP’s proposal should follow the standard diplomatic procedures. The President is waiting for an official invitation and will then provide a response.
