The Bashkan (Governor) of Gagauzia Mihail Formuzal will send his deputy Nicolae Stoianov and the Education Department head Vera Balova to Chisinau to discuss the possibility of organizing a new Romanian language Baccalaureate exam for Gagauz high school students with representatives of the Education Ministry, Info-Prim Neo reports, quoting the official website of Gagauzia. The Bashkan said the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia does not want to politicize the subject. On the contrary, it will try to cooperate with the Government in Chisinau so as to identify a solution to this problem. According to Mihail Formuzal, there are only 57 teachers in the region who teach Romanian, but they do not have the necessary qualifications. The Bashkan said he asked the President and the Minister of Education to send to Gagauzia young specialists for whom Romanian is the mother tongue, but the central authorities put the issue on Gagauz authorities’ shoulders. The average grade on Romanian of the Gagauz high school students is 6.72. Many of the students failed the exam and cannot apply to universities. “If 93 children fail the exam, it cannot be only their blame,” said the Bashkan. Besides organizing a new Romanian language exam for the Gagauz students, the authorities of the Autonomous Unit suggest another solution. “We propose allowing these students to study at the university for a year and then giving them the same tests as for the whole country. If they do not take the exams, the year they studied can be declared null and the students will remain without Baccalaureate diploma,” said the governor. He also said that the Gagauz people are tolerant and willing to study the official language, but they should be given a hand. According to the Assessment and Examination Agency, 47 Gagauz students did not take the Romanian language and literature exam during the second examination round.
