Environmentalists organise expedition to Nistru to raise awareness of the river’s condition
The Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources (MENR) organises an ecologic expedition on the Nistru River on Wednesday, July 11. It will be launched in Naslavcea, the settlement where Nistru enters the territory of Moldova.
According to the environmentalists, the expedition aims at monitoring the quality of water and the condition of the environmental factors on the river meadow, as well as at evaluating the impact of the hydroelectric plants Novodnestrovsc-1 and Novodnestrovsc-2 (Ukraine) on the river. The participants of the actions will try to determine the population to acknowledge the importance of protecting and correctly using the water from the Nistru River.
The Moldovan scientists has several times examined the ecologic situation created in the zone and found many worrisome aspects caused by the aforementioned facilities, including intense infiltration of the water in the accumulation walls, about 4-fold enlargement of river’s bed, a newly-dug accumulation river, decrease in the level and temperature of the water downstream the accumulation lake etc.
The environmentalists say that lately the ecologic situation of Nistru River has considerably worsened. The hydrologic regime is not normal, the waters are massively polluted, self-cleaning capacities are reducing, and some valuable species of fish are disappearing.
The expedition is organised by the State Hydro-meteorological Service. Each team is consists of researchers from the Ecology and Geography Institute, employees of the State Ecologic Inspectorate, representatives of the NGOs and media. The members of the expedition will test the water, will examine the present condition of river’s bed and meadow, and will inform the population about the situation of the environment and environmental factors and about the possible methods which could improve the situation.
