The Ministry of the Environment is waiting for projects that would motivate the people to give up the vehicles in favor of the bike. The projects will be financed by the National Ecological Fund. Until now, no project of the kind was submitted to the Ministry, Ion Magu senior consultant in the institution’s PR and Environment Information Service, has told IPN.
Ion Magu said that the Ministry of the Environment does not have special strategies for motivating the people to travel mainly by bike, but is ready to provide financing for such projects. “Everyone wants water supply and sewerage services now. But, until we do not have a good road infrastructure, we will not be able to build tracks and parking lots for cyclists,” said Ion Magu.
In the municipality of Chisinau there are only several parking lots for bicycles - near the Ministry of the Environment, the National Bank, the Chisinau City Hall and a number of public eateries. There are practically no tracks for cyclists in Chisinau or they are occupied by those who park the vehicles on the roadway.
On June 5 it is marked the World Environment Day. Ion Magu said the situation as regards environment protection in Moldova is satisfactory, but this is due to projects aimed at improving the quality of life and the planting of trees.
