The enshrining of the European course in the Constitution could influence the political processes in Moldova, especially because the interparty struggle is based on the geopolitical factor, Alexandru Solcan, dean of the Faculty of International Relations, Political and Administrative Sciences of the State University of Moldova, stated in the program “Fabrika” on Publika TV, IPN reports.

“The enshrining of the European course in the Constitution would make the geopolitical theme in the political sphere of the Republic of Moldova less important. This would be beneficial to the political processes in our country and in the political competition because the programs of parties would then center on concrete things and mandatory actions,” stated the dean. According to him, the geopolitical factor is the cleavage that makes the difference in the election campaign. But the parties that focus on this cleavage and try to divide society only lose.

The spokesman for the Democratic Party Vitalie Gamurari said the Republic of Moldova cannot fully implement the Association Agreement with the EU outside the good European practices, while the stipulation of the European course in the Constitution means adjustment to these good practices. “We must be sure that any analysis conducted in relation to the Republic of Moldova, especially as regards the rule of law, the level of democratization, justice and corruption fighting, are all in the context of the European Union’s view and this cannot be done outside the European course that will be enshrined in the Constitution,” stated Vitalie Gamurari.

On December 11, the Constitutional Court (CC) endorsed the bill to amend and supplement the Constitution so as to enshrine the European course as the country’s strategic orientation in it that was submitted by 36 MPs. The procedure for amending the Constitution was initiated by the Democratic Party.
