Yevgeny Shevchuk’s decree to draft the men aged between 18 and 27 is a serious provocation. The issue was discussed in the talk show “Fabrika” on Publika TV channel in the evening of July 20, IPN reports.
Former minister of defense Victor Gaiciuc said that besides conscripting young men for military service, there are also mobilized the reservists. “The Transnistrian side probably feels pressure both on the part of Ukraine and of Moldova. I noticed that they copy the military legislation of the National Army of Moldova,” he stated.
Ion Leahu, former member of the Joint Control Commission, considers this is not ordinary military training. “The way the drafting campaign is organized makes us think that Tiraspol wants to extend its army and enlists young men with higher education who received also the rank of officer. This is not ordinary training. The official Chisinau, by its special services, should find out want is going on and take attitude,” he stated.
Valeriu Cerba, pro-rector of the Moldova University of European Studies, also believes that the draft in Transnistria is not accidental. “Shevchuk’s decree perfectly fits the range of provocations designed to destabilize the situation. This makes me think that these developments are not accidental. The President of Ukraine Poroshenko recently said that Russia concentrates its military forces at the border with Ukraine. Shevchuk’s decision could have been coordinated with Moscow,” he said.
Media analyst Cristian Tabara said the conscription in Transnistria does not have justification. “It is a desperate act by a failed leader who can only cause hysteria among the population so as to divert its attention from the economic problems faced by the region. However, if Moscow is involved in this, the situation is very dangerous. Shevchuk plays with fire. A provocation or a shot is enough for the situation to get out of control,” he stated.
