Enhanced risk of catching rabies

Moldovan epidemiologists warn there enhanced risk of catching rabies. Statistics data of the Preventive Medicine Center, issued on the World Rabies Day, annually marked on Sept. 28, speak of favorable conditions of rabies spread out in the entire nation, Info-Prim Neo reports. In the first half of 2008, veterinaries registered 22 of madness at animals. Compared to the previous years, both the number of animals diagnosed with rabies, and the number of the hit territories rose almost twice, being a permanent rise. More people call for the doctor after being bitten. Some 4-5 thousand Moldovans are treated yearly after being bitten by stray dogs. The specialists note the risk of transmitting the disease from animals to people would be minimum, if the owners of pet dogs and cats observed the rules of maintaining them. At the same time, the adults and children are urged not to catch wild animals. When one sees changes in the behaviors of one's pet, he/she should address the veterinary. The main sources of catching rabies, both for man and animals, are the foxes, as they often attack and infect pet animals near forests. The people can get the disease after being bitten, contacting with sick animals' saliva, or skinning wild animals. The incubation period lasts 10 days and then the first symptoms appear. A doctor should be consulted after any bite by animals, especially by vagrant or wild animals.
