English version of memoirs of General Costas launched in Chisinau

Former minister of the interior and of defense of Moldova, General Ion Costas launched the English version of his book “Transnistria 1989-1992. Chronicle of an undeclared war”. The English version of the general’s memoirs was launched first in Brussels in 2014, IPN reports.

The author said the book appeared not accidentally, but after a meeting with the NATO Deputy Secretary General Alexander Vershbow, who asked him to print the book in English too so that the people better realize the methods used by the Russian Federation in the context of the war in Ukraine. The events in Donbas are identical to the developments in Moldova during the war of 1992. “Russians’ methods with regard to the hybrid war in Ukraine were used in our country too,” said General Ion Costas.

The book “Transnistria 1989-1992. Chronicle of an undeclared war” was issued first in Romanian in 2012. It has 40 chapters and starts with an analysis of the situation in the USSR at the end of the 1980s. The author provides details about the Nistru war and relates the military actions, including the operation to capture the separatist Transnistrian leader Igor Smirnov. Besides the general’s memoirs, the book contains copies of official documents of those times.

Ion Costas was minister of the interior in 1990-1992. On February 5, 1992, he was named minister of defense.
