The Professional Day of Probation Service Employees will be celebrated on January 12. This was instituted by a Government Decision on March 9, IPN reports.

Minister of Justice Vladimir Cebotari said the probation service plays a decisive role in the justice sector reform. The goal of probation is to monitor the persons in the legal system and help these re-socialize, to counsel persons freed from detention and prevent new offenses.

“The probation service employees do hard work. They are permanently exposed to risks while fulfilling their professional obligations and when coming into contact with persons who can have an aggressive behavior,” stated the minister.

More than 10,000 persons were on probation in 2016. Over 8,000 people were held in jails. These figures show that justice in Moldova also lays emphasis on non-detention punishments.

The minister noted that the institution of the Professional Day of Probation Service Employees will mean recognition for their work.
