Employees get sick because of inadequate work conditions, minister

Employers must improve work conditions so that employees didn’t get sick on their jobs. The statement was made by Ministry of Labor Valentina Buliga in relation to the amendments according to which employers must pay the allowance for the worker’s 3 day sick leave, Info-Prim Neo reports. “In many countries, employers pay for their employees’ days of temporary incapacity. This amendment was necessary in the process of adjusting the legislative framework to the community acquis. During the year, the payments for temporary incapacity made from the state budget have grown a lot, reaching millions of lei”, said Valentina Buliga “I understand why employers’ associations are worried, but within the social partnership, we mustn’t only ask, but act like partners and take care of the proper management of everyone’s money, of both employers and employees”, said the minister. According to Valentina Buliga, studies show that workers get sick because of inadequate work conditions: air streams, low temperatures, dust and others. The minister added that faked illnesses must be prevented through a mechanism that will be improved through other amendments so that the Ministry of Health, the National Social Insurance Company and the National Health Insurance Company had the tools to check doctors that sign certificates for sick leaves. At the end of December, the Parliament approved in the first reading the draft law according to which the employer will pay for three days of sick leave, and not only one as currently stipulated. The first day will be paid by the worker, the following three by the employer and beginning on the 5th day, the allowance for temporary work incapacity will be paid from the state budget of social insurances.
