Emissions and Pollutants Registry to be implemented in 2018

Starting with 2018, Moldova will implement the National Emissions and Pollutants Registry (RETP). According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Regional Development, and Environment, the document concept is a publicly accessible database, which will contain data on pollutants emitted or transferred, from a variety of sources that are potentially harmful to the environment, IPN reports.

Svetlana Bolocan, Head of the Directorate for Waste and Chemical Substances Policies, mentioned during a workshop that the development of a national Registry will facilitate development of the national reports required by multilateral environment treaties that Moldova has joined.

“By publicly presenting information on polluting emissions, we hope to increase awareness on the main sources of harm to human health and the environment, and to motivate the public to participate in the decision-making process on these threats. Meanwhile, creating the national Registry will obligate economic agents to draw up annual reports on emissions and pollutant transfers, thus providing an incentive to reduce pollution levels and promote environmentally friendly production systems, fostering healthier communities and ecosystems,” added Svetlana Bolocan, quoted in press release by MADRM.

Office for Prevention of Environmental Pollution Manager Tatiana Țugui mentioned that the activities of 2018 will focus on the development and approval of the Guide on applied methodologies and calculation techniques, continued education in the field for economic agents, as well as applied testing of the Automated Information System REPT, in order to ensure the development of the report on emissions and pollutants transfers for 2017, for submission to the Aarhus Convention secretariat.

The training courses will be organized with the support of the project on “Strengthening capacities for RETP development, and support in implementing SAICM in two countries in transition: Moldova and Macedonia,” funded by the United Nations Environment Programme.
